THE BRAUNER MILL

The Brauner Mill following its conversion, according to a watercolour by Augusta Braunerová, after 1883

The mill is mentioned under its original name “The Little Mill” at the beginning of the

18th century when it was a one-storey stone building with a wooden gable and a

mansard roof, as captured in the 1840 painting View of Roztoky from the Vltava by

the Prague painter Dominik Jan Kottula. In 1861 the mill was bought by the Prague

lawyer and important Czech politician František August Brauner. His daughter, the

painter, illustrator and book designer Zdenka Braunerová (1858 – 1934), spent her

childhood and youth here. After her father’s death the old mill ceased to serve its

original purpose and was converted into the family’s summer home. Today its

history is only recalled by the millrace, and at the top of the gable there is a

millwheel gripped by dragons designed by Zdenka Braunerová. The building was

modified for the museum’s needs at the end of the 1970s and was then renovated

after flooding in 2002.
